Full Tour Description
The west, seen with someone who knows it.
Explore western São Miguel on a full-day tour through the volcanic landscapes of Sete Cidades, the dramatic Atlantic coastline and Lagoa do Fogo. Travelling in a comfortable electric van with a local guide, you’ll discover iconic landmarks at a relaxed pace.
The journey typically begins at Pico do Carvão, with sweeping views across São Miguel’s green hills, followed by Lagoa do Canário, a peaceful crater lake surrounded by lush vegetation. A scenic walk then leads to Boca do Inferno, one of the island’s most spectacular viewpoints, overlooking the lakes and volcanic ridges of Sete Cidades.
Continuing around the Sete Cidades crater, you’ll visit Vista do Rei and Cerrado das Freiras, two iconic viewpoints offering different perspectives over the famous twin lakes.
At midday, there’s a break for lunch. Lunch is not included, so you’re welcome to bring your own food or enjoy a meal at a local restaurant for approximately €20 per person. The restaurant lunch must be booked in advance and is paid for on the day.
After lunch, the tour heads towards the western coast. At Miradouro do Escalvado, enjoy panoramic Atlantic views before reaching Mosteiros, known for its dramatic volcanic rock formations, natural pools and picturesque coastline.
The journey continues along the northern coast, stopping at lesser-known viewpoints such as Miradouro das Pedras Negras and Ponta do Cintrão, where rugged coastal scenery and sweeping ocean views reveal another side of São Miguel. Along the way, you’ll pass through Rabo de Peixe and Ribeira Grande, with insights into local life and traditions.
The day usually concludes at Lagoa do Fogo, a stunning crater lake surrounded by the protected volcanic landscapes of São Miguel’s central highlands.
Throughout the tour, your guide shares local stories and adapts the experience to the conditions of the day. Choose a small-group departure with a maximum of eight guests per van, or enjoy the same itinerary privately with your own group.

Pick-Up & Meeting Point
Pick-up and drop-off are available in Ponta Delgada and Lagoa, as well as from Ponta Delgada Airport and the Ponta Delgada Cruise Terminal.
Please provide your accommodation, flight details or cruise ship name when booking. We will confirm your exact pick-up point and time before the tour.
Pick-ups begin at 9:00 AM. Please be ready at the confirmed location at the agreed time. As we collect guests from different locations, your pick-up may take place up to approximately 20 minutes after 9:00 AM.
What to Bring
Wear comfortable footwear and bring a light waterproof layer, even when the morning begins clear.
Bring water, sun protection and a small day bag for personal items.
Bring your own lunch, or bring money/card if you prefer to have lunch at a local restaurant during the tour.
Weather & Flexibility
Island weather can change quickly. The guide may adjust the order of stops to find the best conditions and visibility.
Tours operate in most weather unless conditions make travel unsafe or significantly affect the experience.

A lunch break is included during the tour, but the meal itself is not included in the tour price.
You can choose to have lunch at a local restaurant, typically around €20–€25 per person and paid directly at the restaurant, or bring your own food.

Physical Level & Mobility
Most of the tour is easy and relaxed, with short walks and minimal physical effort.
The most active part of the day is the walk to the Boca do Inferno viewpoint, which involves uneven ground and some uphill sections. Guests who prefer not to do this walk may remain near the vehicle.
